These permits are required and used by the Highway Department to maintain safe and efficient ingress and egress for all county highways, including any and all driveways and snowmobile trails. Permits are used to restrict and regulate access to county highways to promote public safety. An access permit is required for the following considerations:
- Adding an access point
- Moving an access point
- Changing the current use of an access point (e.g., from agricultural to residential)
- Paving an existing access point
Applicants need to review the Access Control Ordinance and the Driveway Access Policy. The Access Control Ordinance and Driveway Access Policy are intended to operate in conjunction with the Access Control Ordinance, only applying to certain county highway segments as outlined in the ordinance.
Additionally, depending on the size of your project, an erosion control permit or stormwater management permit may also be required from the Land Conservation Department for land-disturbing activity related to the driveway installation. Please contact the Land Conservation Department for more information.
