What is Initial Assessment? 

Initial Assessment is a phase of the CPS system where we gather information about reported concerns and assess child safety. During the assessment, home visits are conducted and interviews with all family members and collateral sources are completed. Utilizing the information collected, child welfare professionals determine whether maltreatment has occurred, if the children are safe, and whether additional services may be needed. The assessment is short-term and meant to be completed within 60 days. Child welfare workers can connect families to other services and supports to help them thrive. If further intervention is needed, that will be discussed with the family during this time, and they will move to Ongoing services within the Department.
